Mamluks of Thunder Island

Aly Brisha’s Mamluks of Thunder Island presents a gripping narrative set in a post-apocalyptic future shaped by nuclear wars and climate change. This speculative fiction imagines a world where humanity teeters on the brink, with its survivors confronting a stark choice between two distinct societal models. One is a rigid military and religious dictatorship eschewing technology; the other a society that embraces technological advancement and equality, albeit at the cost of individual sovereignty.

The narrative is anchored in the principle of “survival of the fittest,” providing a lens through which the author examines human relationships, loyalty, and the complexities of decision-making in a drastically changed world. The characters, ranging from slaves to kings, navigate a landscape rife with both external threats and internal turmoil, challenging their values and testing the limits of their resolve.

Brisha’s storytelling prowess is evident in the vividly crafted post-nuclear landscape, imbued with imaginative and futuristic concepts. The science fiction elements, especially those exploring the potential of body modification technology, add a compelling layer to the story. These aspects showcase the author’s foresight and creativity, making for an engaging reading experience.

While the novel’s richly detailed world-building is a standout feature, enhancing the immersive quality of the dystopian setting, it also presents an opportunity for further character development, allowing future narratives to delve deeper into the lives and complexities of the characters. This narrative approach, successful in crafting a richly detailed world, sets the stage for expanded character development in future works, promising readers an even deeper connection with the characters and their journeys.

Mamluks of Thunder Island is a thought-provoking exploration of a future fraught with peril and possibility. It skillfully intertwines speculative elements with human drama, making it a noteworthy addition to the genre.

What is a ‘Perfect’ Life?

Chris Coward Author Interview

Perpendicular Women follows two women living in different universes who, through an unlikely turn of events, are connected. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

First, thank you for inviting me to interview with Literary Titan. It’s an honor and a pleasure.

What got the story going—the spark, if you will—were my personal fantasies and questions. Like all of us, I wondered: What would a “perfect” life look like? Would it bring happiness? How much can we shape our lives here and now? These questions drive Kara’s journey.

Then I pondered the future. We’re talking future-future, like seventy years from now. What might it look like? Would the greed, anger, and fear we see today escalate as our world faces overcrowding, scarcity, and the rise of artificial intelligence? Even now it’s easy to get lost in news stories bloated with messages of doom. We’ll need solutions, for sure. Could everyday people discover them? These questions drive Pandora’s journey.

From these deliberations, Perpendicular Women’s plot, characters, settings, and literary mechanisms evolved.

Now enter the multiverse. The multiverse is a serious cosmological theory that proposes that all possible worlds exist, right now—anything you can imagine. For a writer, it’s golden and enabled me to suggest, metaphorically, a range of possibilities for our future, from cataclysmic to hopeful.

The story owes a lot to three wonderful authors: M.R. Franks, who describes the multiverse in layman’s terms; Peter Frase, who outlines four futures for humankind; and Verne Blanchette, who describes nuclear-survival scenarios. Other resources include the relentless shower of articles, newsletters, and TED talks, all of which made me stop and think.

At the heart of this speculation is a single question: what if? What if we found the “perfect” life? What if humankind did XYZ in the future? These queries form the serious foundation of Perpendicular Women. But the book isn’t all so pensive. I’m a sucker for humor and adventure, and I tried to make the book fun as well as meaningful. So go ahead. Take it to the beach.

I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from, and how did it change as you were writing?

Lots of fun here. I wanted a story that would be relatable, so the worlds in the book are either Earth as we know it or Earthlike. I imagined three worlds that had identical evolutions—until a certain date. It is on that date that a handful of everyday women, including Kara and Pandora, make the difference for the futures of their worlds.

The book opens at a trade show in Arizona—trade shows being familiar territory since I once was a marketing manager. One of the locales, Shell Springs, is loosely patterned after Coral Springs, Florida, where I lived for eight years. Most of the settings, however, were products of my imagination.

For the “future” worlds, the process was straightforward. I projected the issues of today into the future and again asked what if. What if someone did X? What if they did Y? From there, it was a matter of figuring out how that would affect the setting. The fun stuff came next: hovercars, hive-shaped buildings, human-looking robots, and the like. The result was three very different futures—one of which, maybe, could be ours.

As I wrote, the settings didn’t really change; they grew. I’d ask myself, Okay, if we had ABC, would DEF follow? No? Backlash? Then maybe XYZ. With these questions, the worlds gained nuance as I wrote—a process that continues into the writing of the sequel.

The cover for this book is intriguing and really draws attention. How did you create the cover for Perpendicular Women?

I did the proverbial throw-everything-I-can-think-of-against-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks exercise. I wrote down every theme and symbol I could think of (the book has a lot of both), plus descriptions of every significant character and setting. Then I winnowed the document down to six pages and sent it to the publisher’s design team. The designers at Atmosphere Press created nine mockups, bless them, and oh my goodness, they were fabulous.

From there, I narrowed the field to four concepts and ran them by my writing critique group. They chose two. Then I posted both on Facebook and invited comments. People love to share opinions, and the response was a tsunami. And you know what? The vote was even. Exactly fifty-fifty. I could have flipped a coin but decided instead to choose the design that I felt better fit the story’s vibe and characters—thoughtful, frightened, and in the end, courageous. I adore the result. Thanks for the question!

Will this novel be the start of a series or are you working on a different story?

A sequel is percolating. In it are more adventures of some new perpendicular characters, plus two that carry over from the first book. The sequel has a different intent. While Perpendicular Women focuses on the transformation of the individual, the almost picaresque sequel focuses on the transformation of humanity. Think The Wizard of Oz, Gulliver’s Travels, Red Mars, or The End of Men. Check out the sequel’s first two chapters. They appear at the end of the first book.

Here I’d like to interject something. While the themes can be taken seriously in both books, the stories can be read solely for fun and adventure. Or for catharsis. Or, of course, if it fits your mood, for the joy of heavy mental lifting. Reader’s choice.

Thanks again for the questions. Literary Titan does a wonderful service for readers and writers alike. I’m reachable at chrisbusiness@comcast.net, and Perpendicular Women is available on Amazon.

May your universe treat you kindly!

The novel’s ambitious reach and potential for greatness are unequivocally evident. Killam has successfully constructed an expansive universe within a relatively concise format. His ability to weave such a comprehensive world teeters on overwhelmingly but remains an impressive feat, marking his unique contribution to the genre.

Divinely Trained

“Divinely Trained” by Maggie Havoc, the second installment in the riveting “Ancients” series, embarks upon an enthralling journey of power, temptation, and resilience. The protagonist, Ellie, finds her concealed powers unmasked before Lucifer, the formidable hell binder and devil. He offers her a perilous pact, seeking to exploit her capabilities for his benefit. However, upon her refusal of the gifts of immortality and magic, he embarks on an unrelenting pursuit to possess her. The divine intervention of god and a timely rescue by an ancient transports Ellie to distant lands, catalyzing an epic transformation.

Havoc demonstrates her literary prowess in crafting this sequel, as she seamlessly resolves the preceding book’s cliffhanger. Readers will be engrossed from the first page as she weaves a complex tale of suspense and adventure.

One of the most compelling aspects of “Divinely Trained” is Ellie’s character development. Havoc masterfully portrays her transition from a police clerk to an indomitable warrior, keeping the readers riveted. The narrative is further enhanced by the introduction of intriguing side characters and mythical creatures, deftly combining elements of reality with a dash of the fantastical.

Havoc’s meticulous attention to detail and uncanny ability to cultivate suspense renders this book a captivating thriller. Furthermore, her vivid and descriptive writing style elevates the world-building elements presented in the first book, engendering a remarkably immersive reading experience.

The narrative takes a particularly inspiring turn with the introduction of the enigmatic ancient and the showcasing of Ellie’s resilience. As Ellie wrestles with self-doubt and combats her inner demons, she evolves into a more grounded and pragmatic character.

“Divinely Trained” is a dynamic saga imbued with unpredictable plot twists, offering readers an adrenaline-charged, suspenseful journey. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to those seeking an enthralling tale of resilience, courage, and mysticism.

The Drama Of A Personal Vendetta

S. Kirk Pierzchala Author Interview

Harshest Dawn: Beyond Cascadia: Four follows a husband and wife who are trying to escape a sadistic enemy with a revenge-filled plan to destroy them. What was your inspiration for the wild journey you take readers on in this novel?

Harshest Dawn picks up plot threads that were laid in the second installment of the series, Eclipse Rising. I had readers tell me how much they liked the rapport between Owen and Sofia, plus how menacing they thought Hayden Singer was, so it felt natural to continue those themes. I also liked the idea of having the drama of a personal vendetta enacted against the broader elements of a realistic political scenario. As I got into the nuts and bolts of how this might play out, I really had fun setting up obstacles and narrow escapes for the characters!

Were you able to relate to your characters while writing them?

I always get inside a characters’s head as I’m writing, even the ones on the side. It was challenging emotionally to get inside the antagonist, Singer, but I felt he needed to be depicted as believable as possible. However, I think the character I related to most closely was Sofia, especially when she switched to ‘mama bear’ mode and became more engaged in the action.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

That’s a really tough question! I certainly enjoyed plotting Enrique’s rescue sequence, but overall, my favorite was the final escape scene, because I really felt I was alongside Owen and Sofia, holding my breath until the last line of that chapter!

Where does the next book in the series take the characters?

While the main plot of Harshest Dawn is resolved by the end of the book, it’s obvious there’s much more political intrigue and personal drama to explore. The setting will deal with the U.S.’s response to China and Russia gaining a foothold in Pacifica, but the main focus will be on Owen’s entanglement with the insurgent movement, and Singer’s lust for more power in the new country. Of course, those two goals are going to end up on a collision course!

A grim dawn rises in the Pacific Northwest…
The progressive “Successor” party has seized control of the West Coast, further isolating the region from the decayed and feckless United States. Imposing their warped utopian vision on the defenseless citizens, the leaders of the new nation of Pacifica swiftly ramp up persecution of all social and religious opposition.
In a haven far from the chaos, American cyber defender Owen MacIntyre hears disturbing rumors about conditions in his former home, but there’s little he can do to help. Frustrated and powerless, he wonders if it’s time to abandon politics and focus instead on building a peaceful life elsewhere with his wife, Sofia.
But Owen’s ex-supervisor, Pacifica’s Chief Enforcer Hayden Singer, has other ideas. Even a world away, he has MacIntyre dead in his sights and is determined to make him pay for his disloyalty.
Thus politics becomes personal when the fugitive couple is caught in a revenge-fueled scheme that rips their family apart. Desperate and driven, Owen and Sofia will need every skill at their disposal—and some top-secret, risky new technology—to overcome the nightmare of Singer’s sadistic plans.

Although Harshest Dawn builds on the events in Eclipse Rising, the author includes enough backstory that readers new to the series will have no trouble getting up to speed and enjoying this fast-paced tale of high-stakes personal drama, played out against a backdrop of all-too-believable political turmoil.

Spoiler (The Healer Chronicles Book 3)

Fresh off a chaotic battle, Colonel Walker and his band of superhuman kids, created through government-sanctioned experiments, realize that the world is in more danger than they thought. There’s a breach in the barrier separating earth from the dimension housing demons, and dark entities are slowly seeping into our world. Even worse, Ms. G, a strange but powerful woman, is bent on opening the gates between both worlds to let demons into ours. Once again, Alex the healer, Colonel Walker, and the group, with help from the Pentagon, the Vatican, and others, must stop Ms. G before she causes untold darkness to overrun the world and end the human race.

Spoiler, by Michael J. Bowler, is the third book in a gripping series that is brimming with adventure and imaginative science fiction elements. It’s a compelling coming of age story of camaraderie, exploring what is means to be human, and the evils that are lurking on the fringes of the world as we know it.

The book sounds a tad spooky, right? It is, but only when it has to be, otherwise it has an adventurous spirit overall. The author finds a great balance between the dark themes and the refreshing fantasy ones. Frankly, reading Spoiler took me back to the description of Netflix’s Stranger Things which once caught my eye: “hair-raising and heartwarming.”

There are no flowery words or complex descriptions. The writing is simple and evocative as Bowler relies on the strength of his plot and characters to keep you spellbound. It’s been a while since I read a book that had me wondering, “how have I read 100 pages already?” Spoiler reels you in with the promise of chaos, drama, and twists and delivers massively.

The author has a fantastic ability to create gripping tension. He expertly teases several possibilities and leaves a few crumbs of evidence here and there, just enough to heighten your suspicion without giving too much away too soon. I think the book moves along at a good pace. Bowler nicely builds up to the inevitable chaos and uses that buildup to connect readers with the characters before everything devolves into chaos.

Spoiler is a real page-turner and an occasional tear-jerker. If you’re looking for an exciting young adult urban fantasy story with imaginative paranormal elements then you’ll heartily enjoy The Healer Chronicles series.

I’ve Always Felt Empathetic Toward Others

Author Interview Michael J. Bowler

Shifter has the two main characters grappling with some big moral decisions. What was the inspiration for putting them into this position?

I like stories where characters, especially teenagers, have to grapple with more than just who to ask to prom because it’s when we’re faced with serious issues of right vs wrong that we show what we’re made of and who we are inside, and most of us will face tough choices throughout our lives. As a reader, I can ask myself the same questions I pose to my characters and consider which way I might go. My hope is that other readers will do the same. I’ve also thought about the ramifications of having such a power that I could decide who lives and who dies. As pointed out in the book, would it have been moral to kill Hitler before he got very far in his bid to take over the world? Even now, with what we know of history, some people would still argue no and others would say yes.

Are there any emotions or memories from your own life that you put into your characters of Alex and Andy?

I’ve always felt very empathetic toward the pain of others, even as a child and a teen, and wanted to “cure” those people of what ailed them, so I created this character of Alex to do that for me. I just don’t like seeing people unhappy or suffering, which is one reason I could never have become a doctor. Alex’s skills with his wheelchair and his innate tenacity were based on a boy I taught in high school. Despite his wheelchair, that boy could do whatever he put his mind to, sometimes with help from his friends, but mostly by himself. For Andy, I used much of the pain I absorbed from incarcerated kids I worked with who told me horrific stories of being locked in closets for years on end or about how some despicable adult slaughtered their pets in front of them. I sought to depict how hard it might be for such a child to accept love and friendship once released from such an evil upbringing, and I hope Andy comes across as believable in the minds of the readers.

What do you think were some of the defining moments in the development of Alex and Andy’s relationship?

Neither knew of the other’s existence until shortly before they met at the conclusion of Spinner (The Healer Chronicles 1), so I tried to imagine what it would feel like to meet a twin brother I never knew I had. Given the respective backgrounds of the two boys, I felt they could relate as outcasts and that might be the beginning of a friendship and even familial ties. The small moments they shared—when Andy would learn something new from Alex, or when they were washing dishes or working out in the fitness center—these moments helped cement their relationship. Learning how to combine their power and work together defined the growing connection between them, not just because their minds were linked, but because they needed to trust each other, and that must’ve been hard.

Will the next book conclude the story of Alex and Andy or is there more to tell? When will the next book be available?

The next book will conclude this particular storyline, but I have opened enough doors to tell other tales involving these characters and hope to return to them in the future. Spoiler (The Healer Chronicles 3) releases on July 12, 2022.

Fifteen-year-old Alex and his learning-disabled friends barely survived the events of Spinner, but their nightmare has only just begun.

Alex’s wheelchair has never stopped him from doing what he wants, but his supernatural power to heal every human ailment known to science has put him in the crosshairs of a dangerous doomsday cult that will stop at nothing to capture him and his long-lost twin, Andy, who can shift illness from one person to another. When the boys combine their “gifts,” they unleash the power to control life and death.

Now Alex, Andy, and the others have been kidnapped by the U.S. military. On a creepy Air Force base in the remote Nevada desert, they must decide who to trust and who to fear while uncovering secrets this base wants to hide from the world. Who is the young boy with unusual abilities who’s treated like a soldier? What is hidden in an ultra-secret hangar that no one can access? And what unnatural experiments are conducted in that closed-off laboratory?

As Alex unravels these mysteries, he strives to bond with his twin, but Andy is distant and detached, trusting no one. He’s also more attracted to the dangerous power they wield than Alex would like. When misplaced faith in science ignites a hidden lust for supremacy, rescue can only come from the most unlikely source, and Alex must confront a terrible truth.
